RS3 Locomotive 8255 was delivered to the New York Central Railroad by the American Locomotive Co. (ALCo) as a class DRSP-6c diesel in June of 1951.  It was renumbered 5504, Class ARS-16s, in 1966 and later Penn Central 5504 in 1968.  It became Amtrak 127 in 1976 and sold to an individual for the Midland Railway in Kansas where it was restored as NYC 8255.  The locomotive came home to the New York Central's Adirondack branch in 2015 where it expected to return to service in 2026.

The Adirondack Railroad is a scenic passenger rail line that serves the Adirondack Park on former New York Central Railroad trackage between Utica and Tupper Lake, NY.  The railroad is operated by the not-for-profit Adirondack Railroad Preservation Society, with train crews composed largely of volunteers.
