Description
This special customized Boston & Albany J2 Hudson steam locomotive model is a first in a series produced in close collaboration with Harmon Shops and Jr Junction Train & Hobby. This landmark masterpiece has never been produced this accurately in O scale until now. Available in several command control configurations and decoration it is produced for and only available in the Jr Junction Train & Hobby Exclusive Product Collection. Amongst many other exclusive features, this model accurately includes a prototypical square sand dome and short 8-wheel tender.
The Boston & Albany J2 Hudson resembled the famous New York Central but with several important differences. Most notable was a square sandbox, a Boston & Albany alteration made in 1936 that increased the locomotive's supply of sand for traction. Boston & Albany Hudson's had rather short tenders with four-wheel trucks which differed greatly from standard New York Central 12-wheel tenders. Finally, New York Central management allowed the Boston & Albany to forgo the traditional 5200 series and number its Hudson's as 600-619. Boston & Albany split its order of Hudson's evenly between Alco-Schenectady and Lima, deliveries made between 1928 and 1931.
Boston & Albany Hudson's were likely the cleanest on the New York Central System. The shop crews had a reputation when it came to washing or wiping down steam power, probably because they had a relatively easy 200-mile run from Boston to Albany. Some of their Hudson locomotives were specially painted in multi-green paint schemes. Nobody truly knows why. Perhaps because they ran through the beautiful green hills of western Massachusetts. We have thoroughly and exhaustively researched the true shades of this green paint and feel it is absolutely authentic. Disagree? Prove us wrong! “They were the most fussed over, prettied-up engines on all New York Central lines and just maybe the whole USA,” wrote Alvin F. Staufer and Edward L. May in their book Thoroughbreds.
